Community Engagement @Your Library: Creating Vibrant, Diverse, and Inclusive Communities, OLC Conference, May 15, 2019
Many studies point to the importance of nature in children’s development. How can you encourage children’s natural sense of wonder and give them time outside when you work in a library? Discover how the Avon Lake Public Library transformed a small green space into a Children’s Garden with an IMLS grant and cultivated a partnership with the local Garden Club for programming. If your library doesn’t have green space, local parks and community gardens can make terrific partners for outdoor programming – no matter the size of your library or community. You’ll learn about the Dayton Metro Library’s work with the Five Rivers Metroparks and the Westerville Public Library’s partnership with the Otterbein Community Garden.

Gain a better understanding of how to add “mirror” and “window” books in multiple languages to your collections. You’ll learn how to create a world languages collection for the youth in your community including garnering administration support, finding material sources, and promoting the collection

Lost in Translation: Searching for Pippi Longstocking and Pinocchio
Presented at the IBBY Regional Conference, "Through the Looking Glass: Exploring the Wonderland of International Children's Literature."
New York City, October 16-18, 2015 with Dr. Deb L. Marciano, Associate Professor of ECSE, Valdosta State University, Valdosta, Georgia.
Slideshare: http://www.slideshare.net/robinatthelibrary/lost-in-translation-searching-for-pippi-longstocking
Pippi Longstocking and Pinocchio are two of the most instantly recognizable characters in children’s literature. Flying red pigtails, monkey on her shoulder, grinning broadly: Pippi is an unmistakable character. Pinocchio is still nosing around bookshelves, libraries, and mass markets, since 1881. They both live in typical small towns, yet both manage to continuously turn things upside down. Celebrate Pippi and Pinocchio as stories that maintain contemporary interest through intertextual analysis of word choices, cultural elements, and notable additions or deletions which highlight issues involved in translation.

Picture This: Exploring Picture Books Through Art Programming
Presented at OLC (Ohio Library Council) Northeast Chapter Conference, March 25, 2015 with Rebecca O'Neil.
Presented at OLC (Ohio Library Council) Central Chapter Conference, April 23, 2015 with Rebecca O'Neil.
Slideshare: http://www.slideshare.net/westervillelibrary/picture-this-exploring-picture-books-through-art-programming
We all appreciate picture books for their read aloud potential and literacy tie-ins, but what about the potential to teach visual literacy? You don't have to be an artist to jump off the page into the same artistic techniques used in your favorite books, from Caldecott honorees to those featuring famous masters of the past. Learn to plan programs that help children gain a deeper understanding of the variety of techniques used in illustration, including watercolor, pen and ink, papermaking, and printmaking. Two youth librarians will discuss how to structure a program for elementary age kids around the whole creative process, from making a portfolio, to experimenting with different mediums, to writing an artist’s statement, and even curating an exhibit.

Bringing the World to Your Library: Using International Books in Everyday Practice
Presented at OLC (Ohio Library Council) Central Chapter Conference, Worthington, Ohio, May 1, 2014.
Prezi: http://prezi.com/154ez7gflbsh/?utm_campaign=share&utm_medium=copy
Presented at USBBY Regional Conference, St. Louis, Missouri, October 18-20, 2013.
http://www.usbby.org/conf_home.htm
How can you make your library part of the world? Children’s books have been seen as bridges to understanding other cultures, breaking down barriers and facilitating peace. In the 21st century, this ideal seems more important than ever. Although there are great resources for finding multicultural and international literature, these are often underutilized by children’s librarians. How can we incorporate global awareness into everyday library practice and bring the world to the children we serve?
